The
Review |
Collage was one of real surprises in the Polish progressive
rock scene. This DVD captures the quintet in 1996 at the height
of their prowess and success performing much of the material
from their most recent effort. They were not your average
neo-prog act and had many attributes of the classic prog bands
fusing some mainland folk elements along with classic rock
and symphonic styles. Guitarist Mirek Gil appears to be a
student of the Alex Lifeson school of playing; many of his
leads segue nicely into spirited synth solos from keyboardist
Krzysztof Palczewski. Saying that the band occupied a space
somewhere between Rush and IQ would do justice do 70% of their
performance on this DVD. The title track pretty much sums
up what the group does well: vocalist Robert Amirian does
a pretty good job much of the gig but appeared a bit amateurish
at times as on "The Blues". The acoustic guitar based ballad,
"War is over" comes as one of the high points of the gig.
Bonus interviews with band members explain the transition
from the early era to the current time frame of the first
performance. Videos of the band's music come off a little
cheesy but less than any comparable European hair bands of
the day. The final inclusion of rough video of the John Lennon
cover "God" is high note to close out the disc. Part of the
band has since transitioned to form Satellite whom is still
an on-going act. -
