Review:

Almost 18 years after the band did the Last Party Tour and disbanded, Grobschnitt reunited with original member Willi Wildschwein (guitar and vocals) and his sons Stefan (electric guitar and vocals) and Michael (sound) and other musicians Milla Kapolke (bass) with his son Manu (vocals and acoustic – and electric guitars) and keyboard player Deva Tattva with his son Demian (drums and keyboards), what a family spirit!

This 2008 Grobschnitt formation (featuring only two original members) delivers a sound that has not very much in common with the acclaimed Seventies sound: straightforward rock with harder-edged guitar work and bombastic, modern sounding keyboards in the first two tracks Powerplay Finale and Film Im Kopf (captivating duel between electric guitar and synthesizer) and a Biko-like climate with a hypnotizing atmosphere, moving electric guitar, a catchy beat and vocal harmonies in Könige Der Welt. The short ‘unplugged’ track Medley includes the Grobschnitt songs May Day, Wir Wollen Leben, Morning Song and Waldeslied, I like the warm and pleasant sound of the acoustic guitars and German vocals. Only in the very long and exciting composition Sonnentanz (around 43 minutes) we can enjoy the typical Grobschnitt sound, from the intro with warm piano, dreamy vocals and bluesy guitar and strong solos on guitar, bass and synthesizer to the mindblowing middle-section with a great build-up and mighty eruptions and great ‘grand finale’ featuring Grobschnitt in its full splendor with heavy guitars and sumptuous keyboards, goose bumps!
