Review |
Up until the release of this DVD (done in conjunction
with Moonjune Records), PFM was one of those legacy progressive
rock acts that had not been done justice on video or DVD.
Capturing a recent live recording which characterized two
thirds classic material and the remainder spread across more
recent recordings is the scope of this DVD. What is truly
surprising is how prominently guitarist Franco Mussida plays
on the performance of the band's oldest repertoire.
The seasoned veteran also sang much of the older songs
from band's first four recordings which meshed heavy classical
influences together with a flair for English progressive rock
(King Crimson as well as JethroTull). His acoustic guitar
playing on "Dove … Quando" and the excerpt from wonderful
opening track from Jet Lag "Meridiani" demonstrates that the
years have been friendly to his fingers as his playing is
nimble and on target. The band's credibility on the live stage
is anchored by the experienced rhythm section of Patrick Djivas
and Franz Di Cioccio. Key tracks include: 'River of Life"
where keyboardist Flavio Premoli's trademark synthesizer leads
dovetail in Mussida's hand clapping crowd participation section.
"Promenade the Puzzle" has also been dusted off with bassist
Patrick Djivas adding an introductory solo before Premoli
croons one of the pieces he sang in the old days.
Playing anything from Chocolate Kings was always an assertive
workout for the band in their heyday; thus the inclusion of
"Out of the Roundabout" with Di Ciccio taking lead vocals
chores and Monteresi manning the drum stool works well. The
midsection of the original piece is however dropped to navigate
into a vocal section by Premoli with guest soloist Luccio
Fabri contributing spicy string counterpoint. The band never
fails to deliver on "Mr. 9 til 5" and the extended guitar
showcase for Mussida has evolved substantially over the years.
The seasoned axe slinger now begins his showcase in a more
subtle and mysterious mode before drifting into a frenzy of
keen band interplay. 'Celebration" and "Four Holes in the
Ground" serve as competent encores for band that have used
this performance to help gain an international foothold for
more live gigs. -
