Since the late 70s, Saga has been one of
the finest progressive rock groups out there. With a progressive
style that impressed even the most out-there of music fans
as well as more pop-rock oriented music fans, the band has
impressed on every front. "Michael Sadler", the
band’s vocalist and founding member, finally announced he
was quitting the band after over three decades. "Contact"
features some of his final performances with the band. ***
"Contact" is a package that
is sure to please any fan of Saga. This DVD features the
band with its original vocalist, immediately before his
departure, giving it his all and putting on one hell of
a show. The entire band is in fine form for this show, performing
their hits and underrated classics as well.
Saga's-lineup -- "Michael Sadler"-(Vocals),
(guitarist) "Ian Crichton", (bassist) "Jim
Crichton", (keyboardist) "Jim Gilmour", and
(drummer) "Chris Sutherland" -- some of the songs
they do from the early days are - "Careful Where You Step,"
"Wind Him Up," "Scratching the Surface," "On the Loose,"
"Humble Stance," and "The Flyer"), and some recent material
such as "Book of Lies" and "Can't You See Me Now"
You can tell the band really threw out
all the stops here, knowing "Sadler’s" involvement
with the band, after over three decades, was finally coming
to an end. The band gives the fans what they want here.
Enough said. ***
In addition to the concert itself, the
package also includes a (2 cd) set of the show, band interview,
a documentary, and a TV appearance. The band really made
an effort to put together a good package for its fans here,
and all of this content makes a nice supplement to an already-great
concert that would have been worth the price of admission
alone. ***
Saga is one of the greatest bands out there,
and they have been for thirty-plus years. What more can
be said? Saga rocks, and in this package, they put on a
show that proves it like no other. If you’re a fan of the
band, this DVD collection comes highly recommended. ---
One complaint I do have to make, though,
is in regard to the production quality of the concert. Considering
this was Michael Sadler's swan song with the band, you think
the crew would have set up better "Spot Lighting"
and a overall brighter stage show for this all-too-important
"Video/Film Show",the concert is way too murky
with reds and blues along with other colors which washes
out some of the show presentation.Instead, things end up
being monochromatic far too many times in the concert.
Special Features: The limited edition
version of this package includes the interview and concert
on 2 CDs. ---
Saga rocks. Period. If you’re a fan of
the group, Michael Sadler’s swan song, captured beautifully
here, is an absolute must-own. No "Saga" fan should
be without it.
