Review:

Renny Harlin directs 12 Rounds. The film stars John Cena, Ashley Scott, Steve Harris, Gonzalo Menendez, and Aidan Gillen. Brian J. White, Taylor Cole, and Vincent Flood. Trevor Rabin composed the score. ***

A police detective manages to foil a heist in the making, but the culprit's girlfriend is accidentally killed in the chaos. When the would-be criminal escapes from prison, he taunts the detective that sent him to the slammer and supposedly killed his lover through 12 rounds of difficult puzzles - and if he fails, his own lover will be killed. ***

It's tough to come up with a unique action film these days. The genre is getting done to death, just as it has been for the last several decades. 12 Rounds doesn't really succeed in bringing anything new to the table, but it's still a fun way to kill two hours. ***

The movie is average at best, but it's a gritty, down-to-earth action thriller for its duration, and even though the acting tends to be subpar, this is no reason to outright hate the film. It's big, dumb, obvious action-packed fun. This isn't going to land on anyone's “best of the year” lists, but no one can deny that it's a damned entertaining timekiller, no matter how shallow it may be. ***

Image And Sound:

The Blu-Ray looks and sounds excellent. The filmmakers went for a gritty look and feel to the picture, but they didn't bog it down in needless amounts of grain either. The results speak for themselves. Likewise, the lossless audio track will rock your speakers in the action scenes. I wouldn't place this in the upper tier of Blu-Ray releases, but it still looks and sounds amazing.

Special Features:

There are a ton of featurettes on this disc, including quite a few that are exclusive to the BD. Most of these are the generic behind-the-scenes things you'd expect to find on a modern home video release. And there are a lot of them too - so you get to cover a lot of ground on what went into making this film. Also includes is a commentary track and two alternate endings. And to top it off, there is BD-Live content, a digital copy, and the theatrical and unrated versions of the movie in one package.

Final Words:

12 Rounds isn't going to win any rounds for originality, but it certainly is a fun, action-packed thrill ride for its nearly 2-hour duration. This is a fun movie to watch if you're in the mood to kill some time, so it deserves a marginal recommendation.
