The
Review: |
First the bad news. It appears that
licensing problems necessitated Anchor Bay replacing many
of the songs for the second season set. Since much was as
much a part of the series as it was for “Miami Vice” (it’s
hip step-father), many fans will be disappointed to find that
much of the music has been replaced. Despite some strong episodes
during the second season including “Orpheus 3.3” and strong
performances from the cast most notably Johnny Depp (and a
strong parade of guest stars that would move on to bigger
and better things much like Depp), this may be a drawback
for hardcore fans of the series. The good news? You can finally
get the second season on DVD. That's all folks. ---

Image
and Sound: |
The previous
season transfer was drawn from the original source tapes (as
opposed to going back and remastering them from film). While
doing that has its draw backs and they were flawed, overall
they looked better than some other series from the same time
frame. I was pretty forgiving of the limitations of the first
season set primarily because I was under the impression it was
shot on 16mm stock vs. 35mm. I’m not so sure about that now.
Unfortunately, it appears that the video is once again drawn
from a similar source and, while it looks slightly better than
the first season, it could use some improvement. So while no
crimes were committed here, there wasn’t any justice dispensed
as well. The sound is solid although I did notice a hint of
hiss at certain points and the new music appeared to be much
louder than I remember the original songs being. That could
just be faulty memory. |
The
Extras: |
The extras
are lighter on this set than the previous one. There are no
interviews with cast members. My guess is because the show
is licensed that the series had some limitations applied (i.e.,
not enough money to go around to extras or upgrading the image
quality).

Commentary:
|
Once again
a single commentary track from actor Peter DeLuise. Couldn’t
they get anybody else to participate? Since Kim Manners directed
some of these episodes (and later went on to direct “The X-Files”)
I’d love to hear his comments regarding the series. |
Final
Words: |
Although
the slang, music and wardrobe haven’t aged all that well (it
was the end of the 80’s after all which is comparable to the
disco era and late hippie 60’s in terms of how quickly the clothes
looked hopelessly out of date), the strong writing on the series
frequently made it avoid arrested development. Despite the flawed
image quality and the replacement of music from the original
series, fans may want to still pick this up. My advice is that
if you’re not sure rent then buy. |
