Review:

I’ve been a long time fan of “24” beginning with the first season. The amount of lives that Jack Baer has, however, appear to exceed that of a cat and has made the series less believable as time as moved on. Of course, it IS fiction and an action-melodrama at that. The show needed a change and season six provided it in spades. ***

At the conclusion of the fifth season Jack Baer had saved the U.S. from an attempt by Russians radicals to start a war with unprovoked terrorist attacks. Jack exposed the role of the White House in all of this and ended up paying for it with his freedom when he was kidnapped by the Chinese government. At one point during season five Jack invaded the Chinese consulate to get an informant out of there putting him on their wanted list. Now Jack is back due to a complex deal with the Chinese government which has spent the last year torturing him. He’s a changed man—much more cautious and, perhaps, a bit unstable when all is said and done. Now he’s working hand-in-hand with a former Arab terrorist Hamri Al-Assad (Alexander Siddig from “Deep Space Nine” and “Kingdom of Heaven”) to stop radicals from using nuclear bombs on U.S. soil. ---

Image & Sound:

“24” looks terrific with deep, rich blacks and solid skin tones. There is also a nice 5.1 mix that was missing when the first four episodes were released earlier this year on DVD. It packs quite a bit more punch than the 2.0 released with that single disc. ---

Special Features:

We get branched/deleted scenes on each disc for each hour of the show. There are also commentary tracks 12 of them for episodes spread over each disc. Also included are an alternate ending, a season 7 preview. Featurettes include: Inside the Writer’s Room, Opening with a Bang, Inside CTU, Stuns/Special Effects, Prop Department: Weapons, Storming Fayed’s Apt., Background Talent, The Editor’s Cut, Location Lighing, Wardrobe, Casting the show, Day Six Debrief Mobisodes, Webisodes pulled from the website, a public service announcement from star Keifer Sutherland, DVD-ROM feature “The Technology of 24” featurette and an Easter Egg with Sutherland’s “appearance” on “The Simpsons”

Final Words:

Better than the previous season, the sixth held its own when compared to the best seasons (which were seasons 1 and 3 to me). Fox has put together another solid set for the show including a number of very nice special features.
