Review:

Season seven of “24” finds Jack Bauer (Keifer Sutherland)in hot water in its initial episode; he faces hard questions from a senator (Kurtwood Smith of “That 70’s Show” and “Robocop”) about his methods for questioning suspects as a member of the CTU team. Despite questions about his methods, Jack gets pulled into an FBI operation by Agent Renee Walker (Annie Wersching) and discovers that his friend and former co-worker at CTU Tony Almeida (Carlos Bernard) has turned terrorist. ***

The seventh season of “24” finds the show back on track after a lukewarm season six. Introducing familiar characters in new “roles” in the show adds tension to the seventh season. The fact that Jack is on the outside gives him added reason to be a good boy—he can’t be a good boy of course but he does do good for Americans going to any lengths to protect us. ---

Image & Sound:

The seventh season of “24” looks extremely good with a nice transfer. The show is presented in its original 1.78:1 aspect ratio with nice detail the only problem I can see is that darker scenes tend to be a bit muddy looking. Occasionally we see some compression artifacts but on the whole the show looks quite good. ***

Audio surpasses the video with a nearly perfect 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround mix with nice ambient effects even during long stretches of dialogue. ---

Special Features:

We get a number of extras scattered on the six discs in this set. The best are the commentary tracks (a total of 12) which feature a variety production crew and actors. MIA is star Kiefer Sutherland from ANY of the extras. ***

We also get “The Music of 24” a featurette with series composer Sean Callery conducting a choir and orchestra accompanying scenes from the show. ***

Other extras include “Hour 19: The Ambush” a featurette focusing on one of the best episodes “2-3am”. We get deleted scenes as well as another featurette “24-7: The Untold Story” focusing on the “reinvention” of the show after a lack luster season six. ---

Final Words:

The seventh season of “24” is in retrospect one of its finest seasons. The Blu-ray looks extremely good but not quite as strong as I’d hoped with some artifacts that pop up now and again. Whether you decide to buy the Blu-ray or DVD, it’s a strong season dramatically with many of the popular elements that drive the show turned around.
