Though the bonus footage of The 4400's fourth season
DVD set, through behind-the-scenes interviews with its cast
and creators, leads us to believe there are great things
to come, unfortunately the network did not seem to agree,
and before this box set was released, it was announced that
the show had been cancelled. Therefore, these four discs
of USA's The 4400 (released on DVD May 6 2008) will be its
last, in addition to being its most suspenseful.***
Created by Rene Echevarria and Scott Peters, The 4400
started out as a slightly supernatural procedural, following
two NTAC agents, Tom Baldwin and Diana Skouris (Joel Gretsch
and Jacqueline McKenzie, respectively), as they tracked
the progress and abilities of the strangers who arrived
in a ball of light: 4400 individuals, each one whom had
disappeared from different places and points in time, but
who all resurfaced at once, untouched by time but for individual
and unique abilities. The show reinvented itself each season,
though, always answering viewers' questions while presenting
new mysteries and cliffhangers to keep them coming back.
The thirteen episodes of the fourth season is no different
in that sense, propelling us into the near future and bringing
us the return of Diana from Spain, Shawn Farrell (Patrick
Flueger) from the hospital, Isabelle Tyler (Megalyn Echikunwoke)'s
powers, and Jordan Collier (Billy Campbell) as the leader
of the movement. Most importantly, though, the fourth season
kicks up the stakes a notch by introducing not only extraordinarily
abilities among the "common" folk but also the question
of free will: suddenly Promicin is available to everyone
at a fifty-fifty risk (you either get an ability or you
die), and for some that proves to be too tempting. Furthermore,
in season four, The 4400 delves deeper into the conspiracy
theories that peppered the show in its beginning, setting
beloved characters against each other in a paranoia that
is eerily reminiscent of the turmoil within our own current
government.***
Disc 1 features "The Wrath of Graham," "Fear Itself,"
"Audrey Parker's Come and Gone," and "The Truth and Nothing
but the Truth." Disc 2 features "Try The Pie," "The Marked,"
"Till We Have Built Jerusalem," and "No Exit." Disc 3 features
"Daddy's Little Girl," "One Of Us," "Ghost in the Machine,"
and "Tiny Machines." Disc 4 features the finale and also
includes all bonus footage.***
