The 4400 has received individual season DVD releases
in the past, but Paramount has now combined everything into
a single set. ***
For the unfamiliar, the plot of 4400 goes something
like this. What was originally thought to be a comet deposits
a group of exactly 4400 people at Highland Beach, in the
Cascade Range foothills near Mount Rainier, Washington.
Each of the 4400 had disappeared at various times starting
from 1946 in a beam of white light. None of the 4400 have
aged from the time of their disappearance. Confused and
disoriented, they remember nothing between the time of their
disappearance and their return. ***
It’s hard to describe this series; there’s really nothing
else out there quite like it. But if you’re into science
fiction, or just anything that’s out of the ordinary, it’s
a show that will be right up your alley. And if you’re a
fan who didn’t pick up any of the season sets, this complete
series set is the perfect, low-cost way to complete your
collection. A great cast, interesting characters, and a
unique plot ensure that the 4400 never gets boring at any
time during its 4-season run. ---
Image and Sound:
This show looked good on DVD in the season set releases,
and as far as I can tell, this box set uses the same transfers.
The image is sharp throughout, and rarely suffers from any
substantial problems. Audio holds up just as well, though
this isn’t a show that’s going to put your speaker system
to the test. ---

Features: |
A few modest bonuses here and there. Nothing that’s
truly earth-shaking, but like with any TV show on DVD, I’m
grateful anything got included at all. Deleted scenes are
included for most of the seasons the set features. Again,
nothing too special got cut from the show, but these are
nice to watch just the same. Commentary has been included
for the pilot episode, which is an enlightening listen,
though you’ll wish they’d given the same treatment to other
episodes as well. A video intro to the series is included,
and while fairly pointless, you’ll probably want to watch
it once. There are several lesser, minor featurettes, but
nothing really worth mentioning here.

Final Words:
|
The 4400 was a great show, one
of the many that can be filed under “cancelled before its
time.” The show was a sleeper hit of sorts, and it’s well
worth discovering – or rediscovering. This box set release
makes the series more affordable than ever, so it’s highly
recommended to any fan. |
