Special Features:

Review:

Flynn’s former babysitter. Con man Nat (Christopher Walken) discovers that he can’t con his way out of his current situation—he’s been diagnosed with a terminal illness. Nat decides he’s going to have as good a time as possible on his way to the medical treatment facility he hopes will provide him with a cure and to drag his son Flynn (Alessandro Nivola) by crook not hook with him. The only problem is that they have to live on $5 a day to successfully reach their destination. Featuring Sharon Stone and Amanda Peet, “$5 A Day” could easily fall into the treacle filled pit of “heart warming” comedy/drama but with the deft direction of Nigel Cole (“Saving Grace”) and strong performances by the actors, “$5 A Day” earns its way with the audience without conning them into an the emotions it generates. ---

Image & Sound:

The transfer from Image Entertainment looks quite nice. It’s clear that the film was shot on an indie budget because it lacks the smooth look of what you might expect from a big budget studio film. ***

Audio sounds quite nice although the directional effects are somewhat limited due to the nature of the film. Dialog is crisp and clear. ---

Special Features:

We don’t get much in the way of extras but what we do get is pretty good. We get interviews with the cast discussing what attracted them to their characters and the film as well as one featuring the director focusing on everything from the tone of the film and to working with such a high profile cast. We also get a stills gallery as well as the original theatrical trailer for the film.

Final Words:

A well made film, “$5 A Day” manages to rise above its contrived plot due to a strong cast, deftly realized writing and direction.
