8th and Ocean takes you where no one ever needs to go,
the elusive art of modeling. Set in Miami, Florida, 8th
and Ocean takes you everywhere with ten model hopefuls trying
to make it big in the big, bad model industry. The producers
managed to get a pretty eclectic group of models from all
different backgrounds and lifestyles. It wouldn't be a problem
in most cases but they put these ten beautiful people in
apartment together and fireworks are bound to fly.****
For me, I find it very difficult to be sympathetic
to the models. I don't want to hear their moans and complaints
because the reality is beautiful people have it easier in
society. I don't doubt that modeling is a challenging career,
but being a jeans and T-shirt girl myself, it didn't thrill
me much. There was the cliché flirtations and underlying
sexual tensions but no big sparks. Britt, the conservative
county girl was probably my favorite model just because
she was the easiest to relate to. I think the show focused
too much on the twins, their rivalry was fun but some of
the other models didn't stand out.****
There is only ten episodes in the first season but
it really highlights the people and their personalities.
The best thing going for the DVD is that by watching them
in sequence on DVD there is no time lapse and it keeps the
momentum rolling. It's sure to become another must see for
the teen crowds. Image and Sound: The DVD is formatted in
its original fullscreen format, same as it was on TV. The
picture is clear but a little dark sometimes and we lose
some of the details in the darkness. The sound was sharp
but again, we lose some words with too much background music.
Since it's a hip TV show, the soundtrack always makes for
decent listening.

Features: |
For a reality show there are a lot of special features
on the third disc. First off is "Talesha and Adrian's Miami
Hot Spots" which is just what is says. Talesha and Adrian
walk around and point out three different locations that
they think are hot in Miami, a store, a gym, and a night
club. Nothing too fabulous, it's quick and painless. Next
up in "Advice from the experts," Irene Marie talks about
how to break out in the modeling industry. She tells how
she discovers the men and women, and ideally how they come
to become models and make it big. What works and what doesn't,
criteria to meet, good information if it's something you
are interested in being. After that comes quick casting
tapes of all of the stars of the show. It's fun to see what
got them on the show in the first place.
Deleted scenes are up next but it's nothing different
from the show, it didn't add any substance to the show or
change my opinion about what I had already seen. The funniest
part for me was watching the twins have a Jessica Simpson
moment wondering what charcoal was made of. Hint: their
first guess was sand. There was a TRL segment with Britt,
Kelly, Sabrina and Vinci a week after its premiere on MTV.
It's basically introducing them to society and letting the
fans get to know them a little better. Towards the end comes
the aftershows which is the cast talking about each other
and reliving moments of the show. They all compare their
styles, habits, drama and plenty of egos. There are cast
bios which are mini breakdowns of the casts life, where
they come from and where they are going. They read like
the back of movie box, highlighting all of their best features.
The last special feature is a mix of movie and TV series
previews to keep us all up to date.

Final Words:
|
If you are fans of Laguna Beach
then this show is right up your ally. It's a little sappy
and melodramatic but what else is new for MTV? All the reality
shows pretty much play the same to me but it keeps your interest
and the DVD version has a ton of special features for the
fans. |
