Bride Wars is directed by Gary Winick, and stars Kate
Hudson, Anne Hathaway, Candice Bergen, Chris Pratt, Bryan
Greenberg, Steve Ho wey, Kristen Johnston, Michael Arden,
Casey Wilson, John Pankow, Paul Scheer, June Raphael, Hettienne
Park, Lauren Bittner. The musical score is composed by Edward
Shearmur. ***
Bride Wars is the story of two best friends, and their
marriages to their respective lovers. Unfortunately, things
don’t go as well as planned. It turns out they accidentally
booked their weddings for the same day! Instead of rescheduling,
a feud ensues, and it’s bride against bride. ***
Bride Wars is your standard chick flick. Ultimately,
it falls flat more often than it succeeds. The basic plot
is paper-thin. The characters lack any real depth. The supporting
cast is just “on the sidelines” and doesn’t do anything.
There are some laughs to be found here, but they’re buried
in an hour and a half worth of nothingness. ***
With so much talent on deck (Hudson and Hathaway),
how could this movie have failed? While it’s true that the
two leading ladies are very talented, and they have scored
numerous hits in recent years, there’s not much else on
board beyond that. The direction is scattershot, the writing
less-than-impressive, and the whole experience just sort
of implodes on itself. All in all, I can’t recommend Bride
Wars, except to those girls out there who just can’t get
enough of chick flicks. And even then, there are better
ones out there. ---
Image and Sound:
This is a pretty ordinary home video transfer. There
aren’t any major negative issues with the picture, apart
from it being on the soft side a few times throughout the
movie. Fortunately, there aren’t any real flaws to speak
of, either. Dialogue is the bulk on the sound in the movie,
and it comes20across just fine. Again, it’s a good transfer,
both audio and visual-wise, just nothing earth-shattering.
