Review: |
You can’t soar like an Eagle if
you’re stuck with turkeys. Luckily, the Eagles have more than
a handful of classics to continue to play. Chief songwriters
and Eagles architects Don Henley & Glenn Frey managed to create
main stream melodic rock and country rock songs that appealed
to a large audience. In terms of success the Eagles are the
Beatles of their generation but with a revolving cast of support
characters. In this age of bands and singers that use prerecorded
tapes, the fact that the Eagles continue to perform LIVE without
a net (although with a number of supporting players to recreate
their studio albums). “Farewell 1” (don’t fret folks it’s
a tongue-in-cheek title for the tour) catches he band in top
form clearly relishing their longevity and enjoying each other’s
company (something that couldn’t be said about their last
tour before they broke up the first time. As professional
as it was, it was cold, clinical and clearly they hated each
other’s guts). ***
I’m happy to see a band like this
still flourishing in our prepackaged music world. When “artists”
like J.Lo (who sings as well as a monkey can write a novel)
dominate the scene, I’m thrilled beyond belief to see someone—anyone—who
actually has musical talent perform on stage without resorting
to deception to perform for an audience. The Eagles may be
old but they still manage to soar higher than they did in
the old days when it comes to performing live. I agree with
Henley’s assessment that they’re playing and singing better
than before because they’re enjoying it more than their initial
rush of fame. Integrating the band’s solo hits also broadens
the appeal of the group and allows them to revisit their past
glories without wallowing in them. ---

and Sound: |
As sharp
and crystal clear as the clear blue sky on a sunny day after
a rainstorm, “Farewell Tour 1” looks and sounds great. Nice
color reproduction and natural flesh tones are a hallmark of
this video. The 5.1 surround speakers are well utilized putting
you right in the middle of the performance. --- |

Extras: |
We get
an 11 minute behind-the-scenes documentary with the band members
discussing how much fun their having the third time around.
No other extras beyond this are included. You do get a 2 ½
hour show of the band though.

Final
Words: |
Luckily
the video director chose to focus on the band for most of the
concert footage after seeing a recent one with Paul McCartney
where there were cut aways to fans discussing songs interpreting
the performances, I’m happy for a straight forward presentation
of the show. That doesn’t mean it’s one camera recording the
show. We’re taken all around the stage and into the audience
to see the performances. |
