Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights) stars in Early
Edition, a television drama series created by Bob Brush
(The Wonder Years.) ***
Early Edition follows the life of Gary Hobson, who has
recently lost both his job and his wife to a divorce. Things
aren’t looking good, but it isn’t long before he gets a
mysterious gift – tomorrow’s newspaper today. Committed
to use his newfound knowledge to help out whenever possible,
he sets out to put his gift to good use. ***
Early Edition scores major points for its unique premise,
and it’s good to see the series finally hit DVD. With its
interesting central character and unique approach to television
drama, it isn’t surprising that the show actually managed
to stick around for a few seasons, unlike plenty of other
promising shows that get the axe before even completing
a season. Each episode has its own entertaining plot, and
after you watch a few, it won’t be hard to see how this
show built up such a strong following. ***
The set features 22 episodes, spanning 5 discs. Guest
stars for the second season include Tess Harper, Emile Hirsch,
and Louis Gossett, Jr. ---
Image and Sound:
Early Edition is presented in its original 1.33:1 aspect
ratio, and given that the show is fast approaching being
2 decades old, it looks and sounds very good. My only real
complaint is with the occasional softness of the image.
Audio gets the job done, with the emphasis obviously on
dialogue (no surprise there.) All in all the show looks
and sounds pretty good, especially in comparison to other
studios’ releases of television shows from the same era.
