Clueless musicians or just idiots (and is there any
difference)? The amusing “Flight of the Conchords” focuses
on two guys from New Zealand trying to break through as
folk musicians. Played by Jermaine Clement and Bret Mckenzie
and based on their stand up act “Flight of the Conchords”
gives us further misadventures for these rather naïve young
guys. Oh, and they have a single fan that defines the term
which comes from fanatic named Mel who paints pictures of
them and does other things to show her strangely unique
devotion. ***
The Conchords feel a bit ignored as their manager tastes
success with a new band called The Crazy Doggz. The duo
decide to take control of their own career and they manage
to muck it up just as well as their own manager. ***
The silly storylines are complimented by the often
silly but tuneful songs that the duo write and perform for
the show. Songs such as “Too Many Dicks on the Dance Floor”
and “You Don’t Have to Be a Prostitute” are just a tad,
shall we say, funny. Add in the terrific guest stars from
Lucy Lawless to Greg Proops and you’ve got a very clever
show that doesn’t drown in its own cleverness. ---
Image & Sound:
Detail is remarkably good possibly due to the fact that
the second season was shot in high def but the nice transfer
also makes sure that we see as much of that detail as possible.
Colors pop and the clarity is remarkably sharp. ***
Audio is quite good throughout but the sound doesn’t
truly come to life until the musical numbers.
