Review:

Friday the 13th Part V is directed by Danny Steinmann and stars John Shepherd , Melanie Kinnaman, and Shavar Ross. ***

In the Friday the 13th series, the “final chapter” wasn't the final chapter at all. Instead of Jason, we have a mysterious new killer on the loose - an ambulance driver who recently lost his son, and wants revenge on the world. It isn't long before he goes on a Jason-style rampage, and the killing continues. ***

This is one of those film series that just didn't seem to know when to quit. I guess the so-called final chapter wasn't final enough. The new killer lacks the classic vibe we got from the legendary Jason, and while there are some laughable moments here, as a whole you'll wish they'd kept the final chapter as the final one. ***

The formula, to an extent, feels like it was borrowed from other films, even if we get a new killer character. For the most part the movies in this series work alike - numerous kills until we reach the resolution. Even fans of the franchise will likely be disappointed in this ill-fated attempt to revive a franchise that, let's put it simply, never really needed sequels to begin with. ---

Image And Sound:

As I'm sure any viewer of this franchise knows, the films were often shot on a fairly limited budget. With the recent restoration to this series, tons of print damage has been removed and the film scrubbed clean. The image is a bit soft and fine object detail might not be as strong as other movies on DVD from the same era, but that is to be expected considering the low budget. Audio fares similarly, a competent track but nothing that will blow you away. Still, when you consider the low-budget origins, this is a good transfer. I can't imagine the movie looking or sounding better than it does on this DVD.

Special Features:

We get the standard assortment of features the reissues for this franchise have been presenting. A filmmaker commentary, behind-the-scenes and looking back featurettes on the making of the movie, the original trailer, and the latest in the “lost tales from camp blood” features (I personally feel these are unnecessary.) All things considered, though, it's a good package.

Final Words:

This is not one of the Friday the 13th series finest films, but it's somewhat enjoyable for what it is. If you already bought the film and are a die-hard completist of the film, though, you'll want to get this remastered version which also contains plenty of supplements. Long story short - recommended to fans of the franchise and the genre.
