Review:

Take the cast of a cancelled sci-fi cult classic (Tim Allen, Sigorney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shaloub) and mix them with REAL aliens that believe the show was REAL and have based their entire culture around the show and you have the perfect recipe for a very funny character driven comedy. In "Galaxy Quest" Tim Allen plays the role of a washed up actor who along with his cast mates have made a living on the Science Fiction Convention circuit since his show was cancelled over a decade before. Believing that the aliens are fans making an offer for him to perform on the side for them, he accepts the job only to discover that he has to battle a nasty alien that has tortured and pursued the Thermaines for years. Suddenly the cast of a fictional show find themselves having to become real heroes. ***

Why "Galaxy Quest" didn't explode at the box office is beyond me; it's the funniest, best written comedy of its decade. Yep, of its decade. Perhaps the Trekkies didn't like having "Star Trek" made fun of and that's why the film didn't do as well as it should but either way this is a terrific film that was overlooked by most people when it was released. ---

Image & Sound:

This new edition has a stellar transfer that looks terrific. I'm hoping that this DVD edition is a preview of what we might see in a Blu-ray edition of the film. Colors are more accurate. Reds tended to bleed a bit and detail is improved over the original version released on home video nearly a decade ago. ***

The 5.1 mix sounds terrific as well although curiously the DTS mix is missing this time around. ---

Special Features:

"The Historical Documents" provides us with a pretty comprehensive short documentary on the making of the film from conception to execution. ***

We also get featurettes on the make up of the film as well as the CGI and "Never Give Up, "Never Surrender" focuses on the casting of the film. It's rare that the casting is perfect in a comedy but this is an example that it can happen. ***

We get seven deleted scenes and an alternate edit for the end. Additionally, we get the Thermain audio track which IS carried over form the previous edition of the film. It's amusing for all of five minutes. ---

Final Words:

A terrific update of a classic film, "Galaxy Quest" arrives at just the right time with the reboot of "Star Trek" by J. J. Abrams (surely you realize this wasn't an accident). It's amusing and actually touching. If you didn't pick it up before on DVD now is the time to get it.
