Before Simon Baker’s break out role in “The Mentalist”
he starred in the unsuccessful TV series “The Guardian”.
While “The Guardian” was cancelled it had nothing to do
with the quality of the show itself just due to a highly
competitive time slot and the inability to pin down a substantial
audience. Co-starring veteran actor Dabney Coleman (“Buffalo
Bill” and the film “9 to 5” among others) ***
Baker played Nick Fallin a lawyer who sees his career
begin to spiral down the toilet when he caught with drugs
by the police. He’s sentenced to do 1500 hours of community
service while still trying to squeeze in enough time for
his job working for his father’s law firm. The result is
that Nick ends up working at a Legal Aid Service becoming
an advocate for children. Fallin also must deal with an
estranged son which makes his legal aid work and role even
more interesting. ---
Image & Sound:
“The Guardian” looks quite nice in its home video premiere.
Without the success of “The Mentalist” I doubt this would
have come to anyone’s attention after it’s cancellation
even with the unique premise and nice writing on the show.
There are a few digital artifacts such as edge enhancement
that crop up now and again but, overall, the show looks
quite pleasing with a nice anamorphic widescreen presentation
of 1.78:1, colors that are strong and nice detail. ***
The audio is equally strong although this is not primarily
an action driven show so keep in mind that focus is more
on dialogue as a result. The show is closed captioned with
English subtitles. ---
