You could say that both Laguna Beach and The Hills
is MTV's reality answer to The O.C., Gossip Girl, 90210,
and Melrose Place. Like its predecessor, Hills is a gulity
pleasure contains over-the-top storylines involving the
lives, loves, and fights of friends and enemies in California.
The show's fifth season has been spilt into two, with the
first half coming to DVD, as the second half debuted last
season and is currently in production. ***
Season five starts with a bang, as everyone is invited
for Lauren's 23th birthday party -- all but former BFF Heidi,
who's still on the outs with Lauren due to her relationship
with Spencer. In other words, it is their version of the
Brad/Jen/Angelina triangle, as Lauren tries to mend fences
with Heidi but with no success. The main focus in this half
is the over-hyped, over-anticipated wedding of over-exposed
supercouple Heidi and Spencer (remember Tom and Katie?),
who got married last season but decided to make it official
with families and friends. So, why not give them their own
TV series, MTV? But just remember what happened to Nick
and Jessica! The wedding is also Lauren's swan song, as
she leaves The Hills for greener pastures -- and hopefully,
less drama. ***
