Review:

Hollywood – The Dark Side – Death and Scandal is directed by Marino Amoruso. Actors covered in the documentary include James Dean, Sal Mineo, Natalie Wood, Bob Crane, and George Reeves. ***

Hollywood – The Dark Side – Death and Scandal is a documentary that focuses on numerous tragic deaths and notorious scandals that have plagued Hollywood actors over the years. Amongst the actors whose careers are covered in the documentary include James Dean, who died tragically young after starting a promising film career, and the ill-fated Superman actor George Reeves. ***

All in all, there is a lot of ground covered in this relatively-short documentary (it clocks in at just over an hour.) Numerous individuals of Ho llywood’s classic ages are covered here, and there is a wealth of information on these people and the deaths and scandals that plagued their lives. Admittedly, due to its short run time and sheer amount of stars covered, it isn’t able to go too terribly in-depth on any one particular case. That said, if you’ve ever extensively studied the careers of these stars, you probably won’t learn anything new here. That said, though, this is a good documentary and it brings all of this information together in one handy source. ---

Image and Sound:

As a documentary, this feature consists largely of archival footage, so the image and sound quality throughout differs greatly, based on a variety of factors. That said, everything on this disc looks and sounds pretty good, especially considering the age of some of the material in question.

Special Features:

There are no direct “bonus features” on this disc, however a bonus episode of the series is included, which covers rock and roll deaths. A nice extra feature, though I wish there had been more bonus content on the disc. ---

Final Words:

This is a good documentary, and is definitely recommended to anyone who is interested in the history of Hollywood and its classic actors. Die-hards who have already watched similar documentaries probably won’t learn anything new here, but that said, it’s still a terrific documentary. Recommended.
