Review:

In Plain Sight began airing on the USA network in April of 2008. The series stars Mary McCormack, Fred Weller, Todd Williams, Cristián de la Fuente, Nichole Hiltz, Lesley Ann Warren, and Paul Ben-Victor. ***

In Plain Sight follows the exploits of Mary Shannon (McCormack), a Deputy US Marshal employed with the Albuquerque, office of the Federal Witness Protection Program. Shannon lives a difficult life, and must find ways to balance her professional life of protecting the innocent with an often-hectic family life. Her partner, Marshall Mann, both assists her and serves as a foil to her personality and methods. ***

While the show doesn’t yet have a massive following, and it was eclipsed in the ratings by other popular shows of the day during its first season run, In Plain Sight is a terrific show. It puts a new spin on the all-too-familiar police procedural thing. ***

In Plain Sight episodes typically have more than one plot, one involving the main character’s career, and another involving her hectic family life. While I admit the supporting cast and characters can be hit and miss at times, exploring both of these plotlines is one of the things that makes this series memorable.=2 0It isn’t hard to see why USA renewed the show for a second season. If the popularity continues this gradual increase, the show will most likely be around for quite some time still. ***

All in all, In Plain Sight is a great series, and I’m glad to see Universal has decided to give it the DVD treatment. If you’re into cop shows and you’re tired of the same old thing over and over again, In Plain Sight might just be the diversion you need. ---

Image and Sound:

Universal has managed to make In Plain Sight look pretty good for its home video debut. This DVD has light grain levels that never interfere with viewing, and detail, colors, and black levels are generally strong throughout. The audio mix is generally competent, but it really comes to life when the music comes on. All in all, Universal’s first effort bringing this show to home video is a success.

Special Features:

The only bonus feature on the disc is deleted scenes. Fortunately, there are a ton of these on the disc. These include outtakes, alternates, extended scenes, and even full-blown scenes. While it isn’t hard to tell why they were removed pacing-wise, they can be a revelation at times and are a must-view for fans. ---

Final Words:

In Plain Sight is a nice departure from your average police procedural television series. It’s one of those shows that must be seen to be appreciated, thanks largely to Mary McCormack making the show all her own. With a great leading lady and involving plotlines on multiple levels, this set comes highly recommended!
