Review:

Legend of the Seeker is based on the writings of Terry Goodkind. The show stars Craig Horner, Bridget Regan and Bruce Spence. ***

Legend of the Seeker is set in a medieval fantasy world. The majority of the story revolves around a young man living in the woods who discovers it is his destiny to be the “seeker” – a hero meant to rise up and battle the forces of evil. Though reluctant at first, he eventually accepts his role and begins a long and dangerous adventure with traveling companions and allies at his side. ***

According to various reviews, the show has gotten a mixed reception since it first began airing. One reason for this is the storylines often differing from their source material. I’m a bit astonished to see so many people tearing the show apart for this reason – the show itself is excellent. In fact, the characters themselves stay very true to their book counterparts. I had never read the books (at least not heavily) before watching the show, so I may be a bit biased in my opinion here, but this is some damn good fantasy TV – and fills a gap that needed filling. ***

The entire first season is included in this set. However, the series creators have mentioned that the season will also get a Blu-Ray release when the price goes down, most likely after the first of next year. So if you’ve got HD equipment, I recommend holding out for that release. For the rest of you out there, though, this release will do just fine. ---

Image and Sound:

Audio and video quality in this set are fine. The image is colorful, clear, and free of any negative anomalies, but still manages to look film-like and natural. Audio is loud and clear, and sounds better than most TV shows do thanks to all the action and such that is going on. This is a damn good transfer, and people still enjoying their movies and such in standard definition will be satisfied. If you have HD equipment, hold out for the Blu-Ray release though.

Special Features:

For a TV set, there quite a few bonus features included in this set – That’s saying a lot considering I expected this to be a bare-bones package! There are a ton of behind-the-scenes featurettes in the package, including an interview with Terry Goodkind, the author whose works were the inspiration for this instant classic of a television series. Many deleted scenes appear here, along with other featurettes delving into the creation of the series.

Final Words:

Legend of the Seeker comes as a pleasant surprise, and is easily one of the best adventure-oriented television series this reviewer has seen in quite some time. While some critics will nitpick about differences between the show and the books, I’m not complaining. This is a damn good series with some great young actors and exotic locations galore. Strongly recommended!
