Lightning Strikes Twice stars Ruth Roman, Richard Todd,
Mercedes McCambridge, Zachary Scott, and Daryl Hickman.
The film is directed by King Vidor and based on Margaret
Echard's novel A Man Without Friends ***
When a stage actress travels out west on her doctor's
orders, she meets a mysterious man who has been convicted
of killing his wife - and was granted a second trial that
ended in a hung jury. The two fall in love, but it isn't
exactly a match made in heaven - she quickly discovers he
very well may have been his wife's killer after all. ***
The Warner Archive Collection specializes in reissuing
a lot of long-lost classic titles that, in most cases, have
never gotten a DVD release. Lightning Strikes Twice is another
of these many classics, and this is a gritty, entertaining
noir thriller from start to finish. The film is well-directed
and has a solid cast. There isn't a weak performance or
questionable moment in the entire film. This is a superb
film that is just waiting to be rediscovered. ---
Image and Sound:
As one of Warner's Archive Collection titles, this disc
hasn't received any sort of remastering or restoration.
It feels like one of those titles Warner just threw on a
disc just to shut people up who wanted a DVD release of
the movie. I wish the title had received more care than
this. Fortunately, even in its current state, the picture
quality isn't half bad, and there aren't a ton of negative
issues to report. Audio is front-heavy considering the dramatic
nature of the movie, which is to be expect. All in all this
is a good transfer, I just wish Warner had put more effort
into remastering the movie.
