There have been a number of shows out there that have
aimed to steal the crown left vacant by the cancellation
of HBO's classic Sex and the City. But the one show that
seems to be the strongest contender f or the glory is Lipstick
Jungle. And ironically, it's based on a novel written by
Candace Bushnell, the woman who wrote the column on which
Sex and the City was based. ***
The storyline of Lipstick Jungle follows the lives of
three women who are ranked on a “most powerful business
women” list. The threesome includes a magazine editor, a
film industry executive, and a fashion designer (played
by Kim Raver, Brooke Shields, and Lindsay Price, respectively.)
The show follows these three women through their hectic
lives of work and relationships. ***
The show has demonstrated it has a lot of potential,
but unfortunately its first season only produced a handful
of episodes due to the writers strike. The second season
didn’t last a whole lot longer, as it quickly joined the
ranks of short-lived shows that NBC gave the axe to. When
I reviewed the first season a year ago, I predicted that
the show would be around for a long time. And I never thought
I of all people (a 24-year-old male at the time of writing!)
would say this, but I am DEVASTATED that NBC cancelled so
brilliant a show so early in its lifetime. ***
This was a fantastic, edgy series, which I was certain
was going to be on the air for quite some time. But on the
good side, with this release, both seasons are now on the
DVD format t hanks to Universal. Anyone who was a fan of
the series will definitely want to add this set to their
collection. And for those who didn’t catch it, it’s a show
that’s just waiting to be discovered. Watch one episode
and you’ll be asking yourself why NBC opted to give so brilliant
a show the axe. ---
Image and Sound:
This is a show that was originally broadcast in the
HDTV format. And as such, these DVD transfers look incredible.
Images are sharp and clear throughout, with no noticeable
flaws whatsoever. The sound quality fares equally well,
with every aspect of the show being loud and audible throughout.
Universal gets a perfect score for this beautiful, great-sounding
transfer.
