“March of the Penguins”-(Limited Edition)
Reviewer:
Wayne Klein
Studio: Warner Home Video
Genre:
Family
Release Date:
10/27/09
Special Features:

Featurettes, classic Looney Tunes cartoon, “Crittercam”

Review:

In the most inhospitable environment in the world life survives. “March of the Penguins” may anthropomorphize these creatures that exist with meager resources but that doesn’t detract from its power to show devotion and the force of evolution. It’s pretty sad to watch the impact of global warming (and watch those around you who deny it or, worse, contribute to it in a big way)on the creatures that we share the Earth with and it makes this film even more powerful as a result watching them scramble to survive. While the female goes off to find food so that she can insure the survival of her egg the male stays and guards the egg protecting it and keeping it warm. Narrated by Morgan Freeman “March of the Penguins” has lost none of its majestic power. ---

Image & Sound:

“March of the Penguins” doesn’t get any sort of noticeable upgrade for this DVD reissue. The colors continue to look quite good although the color scheme is quite limited because of the bleak environment it was shot in, “March of the Penguins” looks quite good. Detail is quite nice with occasional hints of edge enhancement creeping up in the presentation. ***

Audio sounds terrific with a nice 5.1 mix. ---

Special Features:

We get a classic Looney Tunes cartoon “8 Ball Bunny” where Bugs tries to return a Penguin home. “National Geographic’s Crittercam: Emperor Penguins” gives us an unusual and personal glimpse into the lives of these majestic creatures. We also get “Of Penguins and Men” detailing how the film was shot. The theatrical trailer rounds out the extras. There is also a penguin plush toy for a limited time that comes with this reissue.

Final Words:

A classic movie “The March of the Penguins” gets a nice reissue. It’s a nice set.
