Review:

There’s no doubt that she could win with world over with her smile but it was also nice that she and her cohorts were brilliant at comedy. The fifth season of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” FINALLY arrives on DVD THREE years after the fourth season. I suppose it must be slow at Fox and that’s why this season of the show is finally appearing on DVD. This popular sitcom managed to generation two spin-offs while remaining funny, witty and one of the best comedy series in the history of the medium. ---

Image & Sound:

Presented in its full-frame format, the show looks good although the image varies from quite good to soft sometimes from episode to the next. I suspect that some of these might be either older masters or perhaps they are syndicated versions of the episodes (although I haven’t timed them they do appear to be the appropriate length but this is some minor variations between them which is to be expected to some extent). Skin tones look decent if a bit faded but the color on the whole looks faded as if there hasn’t been any attempt to restore the show (which is probably the case). ***

Audio sounds good but not spectacular. Dialogue remains clear throughout the presentation and we do get the option for subtitles in English and Spanish as with the previous seasons. ---

Special Features:

You were thinking that maybe they might have special features for the fifth season while seasons four didn’t get them? Think again! I guess this is the trick portion of trick-or-treat (hey, it’s October). ***

I’m not sure if any of the outtake reels survive but it would have been nice to have a commentary track or two however I’m happy that this has finally been released on DVD after a three year wait.

Final Words:

One of the best seasons of TMTMS, the fifth season like the fourth catches the actors completely comfortable in their roles but willing to push the edge of their characters in some of the funniest episodes written for the show. Highly recommended.
