A series of comedic shorts that showed theatrical between
or before a double feature in the 40’s, “The Joe McDoakes
Collection” takes a healthy selection of the best shorts
and puts them in a six disc set. These are part of the “burned
to order” series of DVDs that Warner has been doing for
films, shorts and TV movies that have a cult following.
While I still feel that these are a bit expensive for burned
DVDs (they use the highest quality DVDs I should note) these
are a pretty good value overall. Many of these sets wouldn’t
have seen the light of day if not for Warner doing this.
***
We get 63 of the classic shorts most of which have
never appeared on DVD before. Some of these were included
on DVD sets of classic Warner films like "The Treasure of
the Sierra Madre" but the bulk of these haven't been seen
on home video in years. ---
Image & Sound:
The shorts look fairly clean and are, for the most part,
presented with nice looking transfers, good clarity and
detail. There are occasional shots and shorts that are a
bit softer than others but, over all, this is a good looking
set of classic shorts that haven’t been seen since they
were aired on TV ages ago. ***
Audio is presented in the original mono and sounds
quite good. ---
