The British will put the weirdest stuff on TV. Thank
God for them doing that because in America anything weird
and unusual would be cancelled by the third episode. “The
Mighty Boosh” ran for three series (they don’t use “seasons”
over there) on the BBC and gained a cult following for its
unusual humor. The Boosh as they refer to themselves consisted
of comedians Julian Barratt and Noel Fielding originally
and they took their inspiration from the surreal humor of
Monty Python and the British TV show “The Goodies” among
other British institutions. The members on the TV show included
Barratt & Fielding as well as Dave Brown, Michael Fielding
and Rich Fulcher. They proceeded to conquer stage, radio
and the small screen in the UK and developed a cult audience
in the U.S. as well on Cartoon Network’s “Adult Swim”. ***
The series always begins and ends in Bob Fossil’s beat
up zoo the “Zooniverse” and the characters end up migrating
to everything from the Arctic tundra and even stranger places.
In the series Vince Noir a sort of Ziggy Stardust type of
character and Howard Moon a writer/wrestler/boxer and musician
work under Bob Fossil a “touched” individual in the Zooniverse.
The series follows their zany and surreal adventures through
space and time. Oh, did I mention that these guys have their
own musical act that they are trying to promote as well?
It’s called, yep, The Mighty Boosh. By the time of the third
season the series had shifted it’s “locale” to a beat up
thrift shop and they had two interestingly bizarre characters
(as if the characters already on the show weren’t bizarre
enough) including Naboo the Enigma (who has gives his name
to the thrift store cleverly called the “Nabootique”) and
his ape buddy Bollo (yep, a man in a bad ape suit). ---
Image & Sound:
“The Might Boosh” looks pretty good on DVD. It won’t
set new standards in terms of the quality of the transfer
but the images are clear and while there are some artifacts
they’re not distracting.

Final Words:
|
“The Mighty Boosh” won’t be
for everyone. This zany, off-beat series is definitely an
acquired taste but for those who do acquire a taste, there’s
lot of enjoyment to be had. I’d recommend a rental first unless
you’re a fan. |
