The late, great Aaron Spelling began setting up his
Dynasty as one of the television uberproducers with The
Mod Squad, which aired on ABC from 1968 to 1973. The series
chronicles three, hip, young people: rich Pete (One White),
streetwise Linc (One Black), and beautiful Julie (One Blonde),
as they're given the option by Capt. Greer (Tigh Andrews)
to avoid jail: become a team that tackle cases in Los Angeles
that bridge the generation gap. ***
The second half of the show's second season consists
of 13 episodes with guest stars such as future Hill Street
Blues cop and Doogie Howser, M.D. dad James B. Sikking,
Oscar winner Richard Dreyfuss, Martin Sheen (Wall Street),
future Lois Lane Margot Kidder (Superman) and future Mrs.
C herself Marion Ross (Happy Days). ***
The DVD finds the trio coming to the aid of the chief's
drug-addicted daughter and investigating a hit-and-run;
Pete (Michael Cole) and Linc (Clarence Williams III) protecting
a town against a motorcycle gang seeking retribution for
the death of one of their own; Julie (Peggy Lipton) falling
for a Middle Eastern prince and going undercover in a convert
to protect a witness: a nun whose father is a crime boss;
Pete reunites with his parents, while Linc struggles with
his feelings as he looks into a woman's fiancee, whom he
suspects is a criminal. ***

Final Words:

This trio know the streets and
the players involved, and though they're on the right side
of the law, they don't look, act, or think like cops. Pete,
Linc, and Julie are The Mod Squad -- and they're coming to
DVD. *** |
