Skin Deep – The Science of Beauty, gag reel, deleted scenes

Review:

Nip-Tuck premiered on the FX Network in 2003. Created by Ryan Murphy, it became an instant hit for the network, and to date, remains one of the highest-rated shows on the channel. ***

The series stars Dylan Walsh, Julian McMahon, John Hensley and Joely Richardson as plastic surgeons. They receive a number of difficult and often strange requests that their job duties require them to fill. Amongst the highlights of their assignments in the latter half of season 5 are a woman who received a bite from her delusional vampire-like boyfriend, a man wanting age enhancement surgery when he has married a woman who was one of his teachers as a child, and a former band member wanting earlobe surgery so that he can go after a regular job. ***

Disappointingly, Warner has begun to utilize the “half a season” strategy many other companies have been using in recent years. I don’t see why it was necessary to do this outside of the obvious opportunity to make more money – which will come as something of a blow to the fans. ***

Nip-Tuck remains one of the top-rated dramas on television and with good reason. The latter half of the 5th season contains plenty of great moments, making it some of the strongest material the show has presented to date. No fan will want to miss these episodes. ---

Image and Sound:

Excellent production quality on these discs – if you’ve seen any other recent DVD set of the show, you’ll have an idea what to expect here. The image is clear with vibrant colors throughout. Audio is front-heavy, being that this is a drama series, but all in all the show looks and sounds great.

Special Features:

A pretty standard assortment of bonuses are included in this package. In addition to the obligatory gag reel and deleted scenes, the set also includes a “Skin Deep” featurette, which delves deeper into the scientific aspect behind plastic surgery – definitely worth watching if you’re interested in what you see our heroes pursuing on the show.

Final Words:

Nip-Tuck remains a strong drama series well into its 5th season, and this DVD set proves it with a plethora of terrific episodes. I’m somewhat disappointed to see Warner going the “half seasons” route with the show, but since the set can be gotten fairly cheap on sale on sites like Amazon, it’s nothing really worth complaining about. For fans, this set is obviously recommended.
