Review:

The late Anthony Minghella’s last project, “The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency” arrived on HBO with a mixture of sadness and joy. The series based on the popular best-selling novels by Alexander McCall Smith the show tells the story of Precious the first detective agency owned by a woman in her country of Bostwana. The series which is shot on location in Bostwana features a cavalcade of guest stars and the stories which focus on everything from cheating husbands to kidnapped children is a joy to watch. Featuring a cast that includes Colin Salmon, CCH Pounder, Idris Elba, David Oyelowo, Desmond Dube and Lucian Msamati the show has nice production values with top flight direction particularly from Minghella on the pilot episode. ---

Image & Sound:

The show looks extremely good in its DVD debut. Colors are strong, detail and clarity remarkably good. There are occasion digital artifacts that crop up such as aliasing but on the whole the show looks quite good. ***

Audio sounds extremely nice with a very strong 5.1 mix that has nice ambient textures to it. It is however primarily dialogue driven so keep that in mind. ---

Special Features:

“Botswana: The Gem of Africa” is a look at the landscape of Botswana. The country is one of the biggest exporters of diamonds in the world hence the title. ***

“Anthony Minghella’s No. 1 Film” takes us behind-the-scenes into the production with Minghella giving us his insight into the series and what he had hoped to achieve. ***

“The Beat of Bostwana” gives us a glimpse into the rich musical heritage of the region. ***

“The Making of The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency” shows us that Bostwana wasn’t exactly a hub of filmmaking activity prior to the series opening shop there. Essentially they had to build a small industry there. ***

“Author’s Diary” we get an insight into the novels and Smith’s thoughts on the making of the series.

Final Words:

A very good series “The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency” is a rarity—a series in a foreign country actually shot in that country. It’s a very nice set with nice extras.
