The ABC series October Road follows Nick (Bryan Greenberg,
Prime), a young man who wrote his first novel based on his
hometown in Massachusetts. However, when he began to suffer
writer's block, he decides to return home -- where the reception
is chilly, as everyone didn't like the novel. Nick decides
that he must reconnect with his father (Tom Berenger), his
friends, and ex-girlfriend Hannah (Laura Prepon), whom he
left behind and may have fathered her son Sam. Soon, he
realizes that you can go home again. ***
The site Moviezzz Blog called the series a kind of
a spin-off of the 1996 film Beautiful Girls, which was also
written by creator Scott Rosenberg. October Road was supposed
to be a starring vehicle for Greenberg, best known for his
role as basketball player-teen father Jake on One Tree Hill
for three seasons: one-half of a possible supercouple with
Peyton Sawyer (Hilarie Burton). It was also supposed to
give Prepon the opportunity to break away from That 70s
Show's Donna for more adult roles. One of the main factors
of the show is rooting for Nick and Hannah, whom everyone
knows they belong together. ***
Like Men on Trees, the series had a strong following
yet struggled in the ratings and was cancelled by ABC last
year after two seasons. However, on this DVD, which contains
13 episodes, the writers gave loyal fans closure with a
15-minute finale that will make them happy. ***
