“The One” (Blu-ray)

Studio: Sony Home Video
Genre:
Action
Release Date:

Special Features:

Director and crew commentary track, featurettes ---

Review:

Yu-Law (Jet-Li) likes to kill himself. He travels between alternate universes and kills his multiverse twin receiving their life energy and powers in the process. Sentenced to the prison Hades, Law has one more to kill—his counterpart Gabe Law(Jet-Li again) a police officer on Earth. Law escapes and is pursued by multverse agents Roedecker (Delroy Lindo) and Funsch (Jason Statham) to Earth. ***

An entertaining B-movie science fiction flick, “The One” is entertaining hokum featuring plenty of martial arts action. ---

Image & Sound: “The One” looks quite nice in its Blu-ray transfer. Colors are bold with strong detail throughout. There is more than a hint of film grain so it hasn’t been as over processed as many recent catalog title Blu-ray titles. ***

Audio sounds terrific with a sharply defined TrueHD soundtrack. This is one film that you do want to listen to with your home theater system fully engaged. ---

Special Features:

All the special features included here have been ported over from the original DVD release including a solid commentary track featuring the director James Wong (who also co-wrote this with his long-time collaborator Glen Morgan of “The X-Files”) and various members of his crerw including director of photography Robert McLachlan. Unlike some commentary tracks director Wong addresses the negative reviews by film critics. ***

We get a “Making of” featurette as well as one about the final fight scenes in the film and how it was coordinated. “About Face” continues the focus on the fight scenes of the film. “The Many Faces of Jet Li” focuses on the various characters that Li plays in the film. Finally we get an animatic comparison that shows us the CGI storyboards for various scenes.

Final Words:

An entertaining diversion, “The One” can’t rise above its pulp origin but still manages to be entertaining.
