Review:

The creepy predecessor to “The Twilight Zone” the TV show “One Step Beyond” seemed to be everywhere in syndication when I was a kid. I’ll admit when I watched it I always thought the supernatural stories were a bit honky even though they were reportedly based on “real” events. Hosted by the late John Newland (who also directed the show)the series gave early TV audiences the thrill of watching supernatural mystery stories since, essentially, many of them whether they be the appearance of ghosts or the disappearances of people were unsolved. ***

The episodes always had a top notch look to it part of that was the use of existing studio sets, the clever use of lighting and Newland’s clever direction. Featuring a who’s who of character actors and TV stars including Pernell Roberts (“Bonanza”, “Trapper John, MD”), Cloris Leachman (“The Mary Tyler Moore Show”), Julie Adams (“The Creature from the Black Lagoon”), Mike “Touch” Connors (“Mannix”), Werner Klemperer (“Hogan’s Heroes”) and Ross Martin (“The Wild, Wild West”) the show still manages to be creepy even with fifty years on. ---

Image & Sound:

You’ve probably seen the show presented with poor public domain 16mm prints that were distributed for syndication. This is the first time that the show has been presented with transfer from the original 35mm prints for the series and it looks extremely good. Blacks are solid throughout and detail quite good. Scratches and a bit of dirt show up now and again but on the whole the series looks remarkably good. *** Audio sounds extremely good with the mono soundtrack favoring dialogue. We don’t get any subtitles which is a surprise since the audience for this show would probably benefit from having them. --

Special Features:

I’m surprised that CBS/Paramount which inherited this title from World Vision some time ago has been able to find a solid group of special features for this vintage series. ***

We get the pilot episode “The Possessed Bride” in an extended version as presented to the network when the show was being considered as a series. ***

We also get the original opening; the show was sponsored when it originally aired by Alcoa an aluminum manufacturer. We also get a 30 second promo hosted by Newland himself which clearly was shot for the original syndication run of the series. We also get the 1990’s opening designed for the show when it was syndicated again and an audio interview with writer Don Mankiewicz who wrote quite a few episodes of the show. ***

The only thing missing from this set is a biography on Newland who was truly the guiding light behind the show (even though he didn’t write or create the show) during its entire original run. Hopefully we’ll see something with the 2nd season set. ***

Here’s hoping that “The Next Step Beyond” the 1978 revival of the series with Newland as host will be released either as extras included with the second and third season of this series or as part of this set since it technically speaking it is a continuation of the original series.

Final Words:

Dramatizations of both well known and not so well known ghost stories stretching back to the 19th century, “One Step Beyond” still retains much of its creepy atmosphere. A lot of that credit goes to the late Newland who directed 79 of the 96 episodes produced. Newland continued to work as an actor after the cancellation of the show including appearing on “Dr. Kildare” and hosting “The Next Step Beyond” when the series was revived in the late 70’s. Most of his career was spent directing TV movies and episodes of popular TV shows from “Star Trek” to the classic TV movie “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark” (which I reviewed previously) after the cancellation of "One Step Beyond". It's nice to see Newland being remembered as one of the pivotal figures in presenting supernatural material like "One Step Beyond". While the series didn't exactly impact "The Twilight Zone" it mined many of the same areas as Rod Serling's popular series.
