Special Features:

Creating Woodstock featurette

Review:

There’s no escaping the Peanuts franchise. Charles Schultz created countless characters for the ages, as timeless as time itself. His legendary comic strip spawned tons of television specials, which have received many releases on DVD. ***

The 1970s Collection Volume 1 includes the following specials: Play It Again Charlie Brown, You’re Not Elected Charlie Brown, There’s No Time For Love Charlie Brown, A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving, It’s A Mystery Charlie Brown and It’s The Easter Beagle Charlie Brown. Many of these specials have been issued separately in the past multiple times on DVD. ***

If you’re a fan of these characters and you held out on buying Warner’s sold-separately sets for the specials, you’ll definitely want to pick up this collection. It’s great to finally be getting “anthology” sets like this of the specials – at this rate we could have all the classic specials on DVD by the end of 2010! If you already bought them all separately, though (I believe all of these have been sold separately in the past) whether you want to indulge in the double or triple-dip is up to you. Still, there’s no denying this is the best release of the specials to date. ***

Image and Sound:

While it’s clear these specials never went through a truly painstaking remastering effort, they still look better than these specials do when they got their initial DVD releases. These look to be the same transfers Warner used for later individual releases of the movies. All in all they look pretty good. Audio is competent, always audible and free of any major problems but this was never meant to be the kind of presentation that will rock your speakers, anyway.

Special Features:

A brief featurette on the creation of the Woodstock character is included on the disc. Though I wish more bonus material would have been added, as the Peanuts franchise has a lot of history and I’m sure there would be no shortage of interesting stuff to say.

Final Words:

There is no denying the legacy of Peanuts and the greatness of these classic specials. If you didn’t already buy them all separately, this set has these ones in one convenient package. Strongly recommended to any fan of the franchise, though it’s not really worth a double dip if you already have them in some shape or form on DVD.
