Review:

Swimming in a sea of Phish would be the dream of many music fans. This 7 DVD boxed set “The Clifford Ball” presents the band over the course of two performances consisting of nine hours of live performances taking place over August 16 and 17 in 1995. · The band previewed their then unreleased album “Billy Breathes” with the bulk of the performances here never available (officially) before. Fans of the band will be pleased to see both nights of the performances included on this set. Performances include-“Run Like An Antelope”, “Fluffhead”, “Brother”, It’s Ice”, “Runaway Jim”, “The Curtain”, “Suzy Greenberg”, “Maze”, “Fee”, “Taste”, “Sample in A Jar”, “The Lizards”, “Cars Trucks Buses”, Golgi Appartus”, “Slave to the Traffic Light”, “The Flatbed Jam”, “Harpua”, “Tweezer”, “A Day in The Life”, “Scent of a Mule”, “Frankenstein”, “Wilson”, “Reba”, “Punch You In The Eye”, “Old Home Place”, “Waste”, “The Squirming Coil”, “Free”, “Sparkle”, “Split Open and Melt”, “David Bowie”, “Haley’s Comet”, “The Divided Sky”, “Easther”, “AC/DC Bag”, “Ya Mar”, “Bathtub Gin”, “Chalk Dust Torture”, “Talk”, “Train Song”, “Strange Design”, “Amazing Grace”, “Harry Hood”, “Life on Mars”, “NICU”, “Down with Disease”, “2001”, “Makisupa Policeman”, “Weekapaug Groove”, “Contact”, “Simple”, “Mike’s Song”, Hello My Baby”.

Image & Sound:

“The Clifford Ball” looks quite nice with a solid looking presentation. Flesh tones look good and detail is solid throughout. Audio sounds terrific with a nice, warm sounding 5.1 mix. ---

Special Features:

We get footage of the band during the August 15 sound check. We also get a 30 minute documentary covering everything from the planning to the execution of the event and interviews with Phish friend/artist Jim Pollock as well as a footage of lighting director Chris Kuroda performing with the band. ***

On the bonus disc we see one of the reasons why the band wrapped up their playing early on the first night—they took the idea of being a “traveling band” a bit too literally as they drove around on a flatbed truck improvising to every one they passed. ---

Final Words:

A terrific set for Phish fans and the ultimate concert video, “The Clifford Ball” show is spread out over seven discs with over nine hours of music. The bonus disc also gives us a peak behind-the-scenes and some goofy footage of the band aimlessly driving around and improvising as they go. My recommendation to fans—go Phishing and you won’t regret hooking “The Clifford Ball”.b
