The Poker Club is directed by Tim McCann. The film
stars Loren Dean, Judy Reyes, Lori Heuring, Johnathon Schaech,
and Johnny Messner. ***
A group of friends has played poker together one night
a week for years. But, everything changes when a burglar
attempts to invade the home where they play their game –
and the burglar is accidentally killed. While our heroes
agree it would be best to take this secret to their graves,
things don’t work out too well – someone else knows what
they have done, and is out for revenge. ***
This is one of those movies this reviewer came into
not knowing what to expect. And you’ll be delighted to know
it’s a damn good thriller, despite being a relatively-unknown
movie. ***
The film has a variety of excellent performances, is
well-produced and written, and is largely in the spirit
of the classic film noir genre, only set in a contemporary
environment. Many portions of this movie brought to mind
the old Hitch cock films, and if that isn’t a strong compliment
for this film, I don’t know what is. ***
Don’t let the cast of unknowns fool you. The Poker Club
is a brilliant suspense thriller that will keep your eyes
glued to the screen for its entirety. There isn’t a dull
moment here, and everyone puts on a great performance. This
could very well be the sleeper hit of 2009. In other words,
it’s strongly recommended. ---
Image and Sound:
With consistent black levels and solid colors throughout,
not to mention the fact that the image is practically flawless,
this is an excellent DVD transfer from Sony. The stereo
sound is impressive as well, though naturally, don’t expect
it to rock your speakers the way a big-budget blockbuster
would. For what it is, the film looks and sounds great on
DVD.
