When Prison Break premiered, it was an instant hit
for Fox – arguably their most popular live-action drama
series to appear in quite some time. ***
For Prison Break, the title says it all for what the
show is about. In earlier seasons, the main character concocted
a scheme to spring his brother from jail – but in the process
ended up getting imprisoned himself – forcing him to come
up with a similar scheme for escape, from the inside. This
time around, our hero needs to break free and take down
the organization whose plot landed him behind bars. ***
The premise is simple enough, but the show is more
complex and deep than first meets the eye. The characters,
unlike a lot of shows of this type, are actually three-dimensional.
The plot has more depth than you’d be able to guess from
the commercials and promotional spots. And perhaps most
importantly, it’s just an entertaining show to watch. ***
While this is the final season for Prison Break, it
probably is good that the show went out on top, rather than
dragging on for an indefinite number of seasons and eventually
jumping the shark. Season 4, the final season, is an intense
thrill ride from the first episode to the last. To all fans
of the show, this DVD set comes highly recommended. ---
Image and Sound:
Prison Break was filmed with a deliberately gritty
look, and this translates better to home video than you
might think. Clarity and fine object detail surpass most
other television show on DVD releases, and throughout, there
aren’t any major negative image issues. Audio fares just
as well, with loud and clear dialogue and excellently-mastered
sound. This is about as good as TV on standard-def DVD can
possibly look. ---
