Review:

Prison Break ran for 4 seasons on the Fox network. Despite later seasons being critically panned compared to the superior first, the show did maintain a consistent following throughout its life. The Final Break is just what it says it is, the end of the series. ***

Prison Break is one of those shows that probably should have gotten the axe after the first season. What started off as a great series with a simple-but-effective premise quickly spiraled out of control. I’m all for plot twists and an abundance of drama, but the later seasons just overdid it. This is reflected well in the series finale, but I can safely say that the finale is the best thing the show has done since its all-too-forgotten and superior first season. ***

Prison Break has, as the title implies, always been about prison breaks. With plenty of plot twists and drama to go around, it’s a terrific finale, though there are a bit too many characters given emphasis and too many subplots with the various people we have grown to know and love. My other major complaint is that, if you’ve watched the show at all in the past, the finale isn’t going to have a whole lot of shocking plot twists. It’s more-or-less what you’d expect, and I don’t necessarily mean that in a good or bad way. Fans of the show, however, are going to eat this release up. ---

Image and Sound:

Overall a very good presentation. The show is presented in its original 1.78:1 aspect ratio, and for the most part, looks and sounds very good. This is one of those shows that goes for a gritty, down-to-earth look, and you’ll be glad to know it works well on Blu-Ray. There is a strong amount of detail in the image, despite the often drab color pallet. If I have one complaint, it’s that the grain level is a bit inconsistent, but it’s not like it’s going to derail your viewing experience. At most, it’s a miniscule flaw in an otherwise pristine (if you can call a show that looks like this such) transfer. ***

The same can be said of the audio. Not the best in the world but it’s still above average for a television show of all things. The bass and the music are a little higher in the mix than this reviewer likes, but I’m at least glad to see that elements got decent emphasis in the mix. The only issue is that sometimes these things and the noise of the various atmospheres can distract you from the dialogue. Still, I’m not complaining. ---

Special Features:

Nothing outside of just under 5 minutes worth of deleted scenes. And a few trailers, if you count those as extras.

Final Words:

Prison Break goes out with a solid series finale. While it never equals the unparalleled first season, it’s still the best thing in the series that has come since. A solid recommendation for any fan of the show.
