In depth look at Tony and Emmy Award winning cast member Audra McDonald, behind the scenes with the cast, bloopers, extended scenes, deleted scenes with optional commentary from series creator Shonda Rhimes

Review:

Private Practice is a spin-off from another recent hit television series, Grey's Anatomy. The spin-off follows Kate Walsh's character from Grey, Addison Montgomery. She has left Seattle and joined a private practice in LA. ***

For the new show, a very talented selection of actors have been cast. The cast includes Tim Daly of Wings fame as an alternative medicine specialist, Audra McDonald as a fertility specialist, and Taye Diggs as an internal medicine specialist. Other roles are played by Amy Brenneman, Paul Adelstein, KaDee Strickland and Chris Lowell. The show's plot lines are every bit as dramatic and entertaining as the show it was spun off from, and it isn't surprising that the show has been renewed for a third season. ***

This 6-disc set contains every episode of the show's second season. 22 episodes total appear in this set, and the ongoing story arcs make this season even better than the first (which was excellent in its own right.) ***

Ultimately, Private Practice doesn't fall victim to any spin-off curse. With a third season on the horizon and a cast of talented actors in interesting roles and plots, the show doesn't fail to please. ---

Image And Sound:

As with most recent TV shows, Private Practice looks and sounds pretty good on DVD. The image is clear and colorful and no major anomalies are present to detract from the viewing experience. Audio is front-heavy, which is natural for a dialogue-intensive show such as this. It's about as good as the show can be expected to look or sound on the DVD format, and I say that as an enormous compliment.

Special Features:

The package has a surprisingly good amount of bonuses given its nature as a television season set. First and foremost is an in-depth look at Audra McDonald, one of the most celebrated members of the multi-talented cast. Additionally, the package features behind the scenes with the cast and a gag reel, the latter of which seems to be an obligatory inclusion in DVD season sets these days. Rounding out the package is a selection of deleted and extended scenes with optional commentary. All in all, a very pleasing package.

Final Words:

Private Practice is every bit as good as Grey's Anatomy, the show it has been spun off from. Kate Walsh reprises her classic Grey's character, and the new series as anything but a disappointment. Solid writing and storylines make Private Practice one of the most promising new drama series to hit the airwaves in recent years. This package gets a strong recommendation!
