The recently cancelled Pushing Daisies had the odds
against them: critically-acclaimed with a passionate following,
but one of the freshman victims of the recent Writers' Strike,
and was sadly demised in the middle of its second season.
However, ABC recently brought the much-loved show back on
Saturday nights (The "Dead Zone" timeslot, so to speak)
to "burn" off the last episodes, and now fans can relive
the second and final season on DVD. ***
The quirky, unique, Burton-esque, and touching drama
follows Ned (Lee Pace), a man who not only makes pies, but
he also the ability to bring dead people back to life --
with just one touch, which gives private eye Emerson Cod
(Chi McBride, Human Target) an advantage, as Ned helps him
solve cases. At the start of the series, Ned brought back
true love Chuck (Anna Friel) , but there's an disadvantage:
they can't touch one another, or else Chuck becomes dead
for good, so, they must try to maintain a "normal" relationship
without the physical. ***
Season two (13 episodes) starts with Chuck going undercover
to stung a killer at a honey-based cosmetics company, and
as she starts to take control of her life, she begins to
look into her family history, and her relationship with
Ned began to change, as well. Ned, on the other hand, starts
to look into his family history also. Emerson's famous sleuth
mother comes to town to help out on a case, as a beautiful
con artist with ties to his past needs the PI's aid to clear
her name, and the series finale brings everyone at full
circle. ***
