Review:

The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest was an attempt by Hanna-Barbera to modernize a classic franchise – something a number of cartoon companies have been doing in the last few decades. The result here was met with a mixed reaction. ***

The story is the same as it was with the original series, though the characters are older than they were in that classic. Jonny Quest, son of Dr. Quest, embarks on a number of James Bond-esque adventures around the world – with danger lurking around every corner. A number of the adventures take place in a 3D-animated realm, as well, adding something unique to the show. ***

Voice talents were among the best in the business for this revival of Jonny Quest. Amongst them are J.D. Roth starring as the title character (you may remember him as the host of the classic game show Fun House), Rob Paulsen (probably best known for the voices he did on the 90s cartoon Animaniacs), Robert Patrick (the villain from Terminator 2), and Frank Welker (this guy has done voice acting in more cartoons than you probably even know exist.) ***

All in all, this was a decent attempt to revive Jonny Quest, but it just falls flat when you compare it to the classic it was trying to emulate. The 3D scenes feel like too much of a gimmick (it wasn’t uncommon to try to cash in on the 3D trend in 90s cartoons), and the show was changed drastically throughout its relatively-short existence. But the end result isn’t bad by any means. If you were a fan of this series, it’s a must-buy. If you haven’t yet experienced it yet, it’s perhaps best enjoyed as a rental first. ---

Image and Sound: Being only about 15 years old, the production quality for the show ported to DVD ain’t too bad. The images are bright and clear, and the audio quality is free of any anomalies. I admit, they could have touched up the picture a little better, but as a whole The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest looks just fine. ---

Special Features:

All we get is a featurette on updating the character/franchise/etc. for modern times. Fun to watch, but I wish they’d given us more. Interviews with the voice actors would have been nice, considering the talent involved.

Final Words:

No remake could ever top the original Jonny Quest, which is a timeless animated classic. But Real Adventures does a decent job modernizing the franchise, and has its moments. I recommend investing your hard-earned cash in the DVD sets of the original 60s series, though, and enjoying Real Adventures as a rental title. But if you were a fan of it during its original run, don’t hesitate to pick this set up.
