The Shield premiered a few years back, and it has been
an instant hit with audiences. The series is about an experimental
division of the Los Angeles Police Department, set up in
a fictional district of the city. The group uses a converted
church as their headquarters, and features a group of officers
that will stop at nothing to restore peace and order to
their fair city 9 3 by any means necessary. ***
Michael Chiklis has top billing with his portrayal
of the strike team’s leader. Additionally, the show has
various other characters, and will normally run separate
story lines through each episode. ***
After seven great seasons, it was disappointing to
see the show disappear from the airwaves. However, I can
safely say that the show went out on top. The seventh and
final season is nothing short of excellent, and features
the cast doing what they do best. ***
Cop shows are nothing new. But The Shield, with its
darker themes and officers who at times come off seeming
more like vigilantes than straight-up lawmen. It’s no big
surprise that the show has been renewed for a seventh season
(which has been confirmed to be the show’s FINAL season.)
Start from the beginning or you’ll be confused. But if you’re
already a tried and true fan, you’ll want to get your hands
on this latest season set. ---
Image and Sound:
The anamorphic widescreen transfer of the series is
quite good, aside from some color issues here and there.
However, this is a show that was meant to have an intentionally
gritty and grainy look so it c an’t really be judged by
the same standards as other TV series on DVD. Sound quality
is terrific, taking advantage of the format’s capabilities
beautifully. ***
