Studio: 20th CenturyFox/MGM
Genre:
TV-Series
Release Date:
7/21/09
Special Features:

Commentary track by Brad Wright and Richard Dean Anderson, “Back to the Beginning” featurette

Review:

Fans of the “Stargate” TV series will be happy that MGM has revisited the original pilot extending it, adding new visual effects to enhance the original pilot episode and allowed actor Christopher Judge to “revoice” essentially improving his performance from the original pilot episode. “Stargate SG-1: Children of the Gods” established the longest running U.S. science fiction TV show and established a new franchise outside of the “Star Trek” universe. ***

This new expanded version of the original pilot takes place a year after the original 1994 feature film “Stargate”. Colonel Jack O’Neill (Richard Dean Anderson), Captain Sam Carter (Amanda Tapping) leave for planet Abydos to defend the natives from the villain Ra. Ra or some other alien impersonating Ra kidnaps Dr. Daniel Jackson ‘s (Michael Shanks) wife and her brother. It’s up to O’Neill, Carter and Jackson to track Ra down and save Jackson’s wife helping to defend Earth and other planets against the threat of the Gou’ald. Eventually joined by Teal’c (Christopher Judge) who served Ra at one time, this diverse team would continue on through 10 seasons and a number of TV movies to wrap up the series story arc. ---

Image & Sound: The pilot movie looks quite nice with a nice, robust transfer. Colors are nice throughout and the new CGI effects included are blended in quite nicely. Audio sounds extremely good with a nice 5.1 Dolby Surround mix. The new 5.1 mix has a nice kick.

Special Features:

We get a brand new commentary track from co-writer and producer Brad Wright along with actor Richard Dean Anderson. ***

We also get a featurette that highlights the revision of the pilot, why the producers and MGM chose to go back and redo some of the visuals/extend the pilot, etc. for this special movie version.

Final Words:

The original TV pilot gets a nice digital upgrade with nice new visual effects that compliment the TV film as well as a good featurette and new commentary track. The addition of the scenes cut for the pilot’s airing on Showtime back in the day makes the story a bit clearer and linear.
