Diehard fans of The State can finally relax, because
it is finally coming to DVD. It's not a joke; I'm very serious.
The State, which aired from 1993-95, features talented comedians
and actors such as Michael Ian Black and Ken Marino. The
DVD contains over 90 minutes of unaired sketches that includes
the pilot from these wild, crazy, innovative, and rowdy
players of sketch comedy. ***
After three seasons, The State plans to make plans
to go against the Big League of Network Late Night Television.
The first attempt was to be picked up by ABC to air opposite
NBC's juggernaut Saturday Night Live; the second was CBS
offering to air a series of specials that, if successful,
would lead to a weekly series. Despite critical acclaim,
lack of promotion and advertising cause CBS to shelve their
plan, and both attempts failed. ***
Still, The State continues to develop a loyal following
to this day, as cast members Ian Black and Marino find success
in recurring and supporting roles in Ed, Dawson's Creek,
and Reaper as gay demon couple Tony & Steve, as well as
commenators of VH1's I Love The 70s, 80s, 90s, and so forth.
Earlier this year, the gang reunited in San Francisco for
the first time since the show ended for two shows plus a
Q&A at The Clay theater, and answered questions from fans
at the Herbst, and there are plans for a State movie currently
in the works but no release date has been set yet due to
the recent writers' strike. ***
