Those bumblin' but lovable trio are back for laughs
again with the release of The Three Stooges Collection,
Volume 6: 1949-51. It is a two-disc set that contains 24
film shorts featuring the popular trio getting into all
sorts of comic mischief, chaos, and trouble. This collection
includes Shemp, who had a successful career at the time,
and was reluctant to become the third Stooge. Still, he
joined Moe and Larry in 1947 when Curly became sick and
decides to retired. Shemp thought he was a temporary replacement
until Curly got better, but tragically it was permanent
as Curly died on January 18, 1952; Shemp died three years
later on November 22, 1955 at the age of 60. ***
According to Amazon, this is where the Three Stooges
were at the top of the game in this collection with shorts
such as "Merry Mavericks" (1951), a remade of 1943's "Phony
Express" with Red Morgan and his rogue crew. In "Self Made
Maids" (1950), the Stooges took on multiple roles: themselves,
their fiancees, their future fathers-in-laws (Moe), and
their triplet babies. Larry, Moe, and Shemp improvise their
material in "Don't Throw that Knife" (1951) with the use
of household appliances as the trio were confined to a single
room. ***
