Top Gear has been England’s leading automotive program
for three decades. The original series ran from the seventies
until 2001, and was relaunched in 2002 with a new format.
The second version of the show has run ever since. And the
tenth season is now available on DVD. ***
It’s difficult to provide a simple explanation for
Top Gear, because the show does so much. There are reviews
of cars, as well as the daring hosts attempting a variety
of stunts and challenges in their vehicles. The change in
format has done little to derail the show – not only does
the show continue to air in the UK, it has gained a major
following overseas as well – including here in the United
States. The format of the show ensures that it is easily
accessible to all audiences, regardless of age or gender.
To fully understand the show, its tone, and everything it
does, you need to see it. ***
One of the great things about Top Gear is the way the
show is made. You don’t have to be an automotive junkie
to enjoy this show. The way it is made guarantees that just
about anyone who sits down for an episode will know exactly
what is going on, and be thoroughly entertained. There really
is no other show like this on the air. Any fan of the show
will want to pick up the tenth season. And if you’re not
familiar with the program, I recommend checking it out.
The tenth season is one of the best so far, so it’s a good
place to jump on board if you’re new to it. ---
Image and Sound:
Top Gear look excellent in its DVD incarnation. The
image is clear throughout, and the audio quality better
than you’d expect for a TV show on home video. The show
is presented in its original widescreen aspect ratio, and
all in all, I would say it looks and sounds fantastic on
DVD. ---
