“Torchwood: Children of Earth” {Blu-ray}
Reviewer:
Wayne Klein
Studio: Warner/BBC Home Video
Genre:
TV-Series
Release Date:
7/28/09
Special Features:

“Torchwood Declassified”, trailers

Review:

Being a member of Torchwood carries a tremendous risk what else can explain the high death rate of members. The third series of “Torchwood” finds the team reduced to a trio on the run and trying to stop an alien race known only as 456 from blackmailing the human race into giving up 10% of the world’s population of children. The big question is WHY the aliens want with them and WHAT is Jack’s (John Barrowman continues to be completely charming giving a terrific performance ) role in all of this. ***

Unquestionably the best episodes of the series with a terrific and moving story “Torchwood: Children of Earth” moves along at a breakneck pace during its brief third season. Gwen Cooper (Eve Myles) and Ianto Jones (Gareth David-Lloyd) remain the only two members of Torchwood active. ---

Image & Sound:

“Torchwood” receives a “stellar” transfer for Blu-ray. The earlier seasons were a bit problematic in DVD (I haven’t seen the Blu-rays for seasons one or two yet so can’t comment on those)and I had a bad feeling that this might be inferior as well but Time-Warner has done a commendable job with the show. ***

Audio sounds brilliant throughout as well with dialogue front and center. A problem with some earlier DVDs of “Doctor Who” (and, if I recall correctly, the first season of “Torchwood” on DVD) was that the music and sound effects would often overwhelm the dialogue in the 5.1 mixes. That’s not the case here. ---

Special Features:

The set is surprisingly short on special features. We get “Torchwood: Declassified” an ordinary making-of documentary that is filled with talking heads repeating what the story is about. We also get a trailer for the terrific third (and sadly final)season of “Primeval” on the second disc.

Final Words:

“Torchwood” goes out on a high note (with the possibility that it MIGHT return later) with a five episode mini-series. It’s a terrific season with the strongest writing and direction of the series and enough action for a feature length motion picture. Even though the extras are a bit thin, the series is well worth picking up and you’ll find yourself watching it again even if you know the end of the mini-series. Highly recommended.
