TV-Series

Review:

19 discs of hardcore action! No, it’s not porn. It’s “The Unit” and were not referring to anatomy. “The Unit” is one of the best unsung action/drama series that aired on Fox over the last four years. Created by Shawn Ryan (“The Shield”) and playwriter/director David Mamet, “The Unit” puts all four seasons of the show in one convenient box. ***

The members of the Unit are Special Forces soldiers that operate outside of the military chain of command to tackle difficult often questionable missions. The wives of the members of the Unit know about their husbands’ special role and all members operate with a cover story as to what their husbands do for a living. The members of the Unit never get the praise or promotions that they deserve simply because they have to live a lie to protect the truth. ***

The series often presents the perspective from both the soldiers and their wives, the stress they face having to live a fictitious life. ---

Image & Sound:

“The Unit’ looks quite good with a nice, sharp transfer. Color is quite good throughout the series. The show deliberately has a gritty and grainy presentation but it’s never distracting only adding to the character of the show. ***

The audio sounds extremely good with a nice 5.1 mix that is often very dynamic. ---

Special Features:

We get commentary tracks from creator Shawn Ryan, cast members, writer/producer Scott Foley, a number of featurettes on the series covering everything from production to weapons handling on the series. The nice thing about this series is that it is democratic about including everyone from the DP to various writers on the show.

Final Words:

Packaged in a nice box if you haven’t purchased any of the seasons of “The Unit” I’d recommend getting the “giftset” since it has everything in one…”unit”.
